Ikrithealzin(mountain cattle).

General Description: native to the Hrim Mountains of Sjirra, the ikrithealzin is a species of bovine resembling the terran yak. Powerful creatures that can easily grow to a height of two meters at the shoulder, they have thick and waterproof fur that can grow very long in winter. The fur is usually various shades of brown, but black, grey and even red coloration is not uncommon-- mountain cattle wool is also often used to craft clothes in many parts of Sjirra. Though and created to handle harsh conditions, ikrithealzins have been known to survive temperatures down to minus fifty degrees celcius during winter, and they can survive on almost no food for months provided that they have worked up a good layer of fat first.
Fairly relaxed animals(not to forget proud of their strenght)-- ikrithealzin are often found as riding and working animals in low-tech communities throughout Sjirra, or as rescuers in the mountains when dragons or the like aren't available. Generally an ikrithealzin will pick a person he or she like, and it's not unusual for it to stick with this person for the duration of its life. Ikrithealzin herds are lead by a female matriarch, while the bulls lead more nomadic lives-- unless one have earned the right to become the matriarch's mate.

Special Abilities: mountain cattle are capable of communicating telepathically, though it does take a year or two before they can acctually speak rather than simply using images/emotions. Unlike the cows, bulls cannot so magic, however-- they'll heal from injuries that would prove fatal to most other animals.

Size at birth: 50-60 cm tall at the shoulder.
Size at maturity: around two meters tall at the shoulder, cows being slightly shorter.
Time to maturity: 15-16 years.

Mental Abilities: adult ikrithealzin are as smart as the average human. However, since it takes a bit for the brain to develop properly, calfs and younglings are generally not too smart.
