Creature Name: iron drake.

General Description: the only truly northern species of drake, the iron drakes were also the first who started working with the hominid races. Unfortunately, some might say that they were careless in their choice of allies. Valuing strenght, they may have seen something of themselves in the Earssa people, that were quite so interested in ever expanding their territory. It was through that alliance that the Earssa Realm came to exist. However, as their power grew, the earssa also became less interested in sharing it. So their leaders sought ways to destroy, or even control the iron drakes, slowly working towards this end through almost a decade.
In the end, the earssa achieved this by poisoning most of the adult iron drakes, killing them as the drakes were unable to defend themselves. Only the eggs and very young whelps were spared, to be trained to serve the earssa.
Largest of the drake species, iron drakes are covered with scales the color of burnished iron, often with rust colored markings along their necks and backs. The head is wedge-shaped, curving horns and spikes growing from the top of the skull and back of the jaw. The older a drake is, the more horns and spikes it will have, sometimes those of a truly old individual can number several dozen. Their eyes are much like those of an eagle. The neck is relatively short and muscular, but surprisingly agile. Iron drakes are built much like cats, although they are noticeably more muscular. Their wings are long and broad, making them strong and endurant fliers, though they are a bit less agile than other drakes. Females are generally longer in the body and have longer legs than the more compact males. Their paw-like feet are equiped with five taloned fingers, males also having a fighting spur at the hind legs. After the earssa turned the iron drakes into their servants, it has also become custom to mark a drake according to his or her rank. Low rankers have the tips of their horns set with blackened iron. Higher ranks have gems set in their horns, starting with pyrite; amethyst, emerald, sapphire and finally diamond. Only the tops ranks, sapphire and diamond, who have proven their unwavering loyality to the earssa, are allowed to breed. Those displaying too much independent thought, are always killed, often in public execusions or as sacrifices to the gods.
