Fern Owl
General Description
A native of Midel with very powerful magic. The owls are as mixed characteristically as humans. Some like to live alone, some live in communities and/or family groups. They usually mate for life, but this arrangement can be mutually broken for a variety of reasons. They make excellent teachers, and there are several magic schools for all magic capable species, usually run by Fern owls. As well as mind magics, all are talented wizards, and some spend their whole lives creating new spells. This is not as easy as it may seem, as an owl has to consider the consequences of a spell’s action, whether it has an opposite reaction or is adversely affecting the environment.
Special Abilities
The owls have magics in common and some talents exclusive to colour type.
Common magics: Teleportation, including anyone touching them at the time. Telepathic links with those nearby, but a strong link over any distance with bondmate.
The talent colours -
Telekinesis – Red. Red owls have a very strong power, able to move objects many times heavier than themselves, over great distance.
Telepathy – Purple. These owls have an incredibly strong telepathic ability, over great distance, and strong enough to control crowds.
Healing – Green. These owls can sense internal problems and heal them and heal very serious injuries. Can heal someone almost dead but not the dead – this is a barrier they refuse to cross.
There are also some gender specific colours and these colours usually have a combination of the stronger and rarer magical talents.
Blue – female – healing and telekinesis.
Yellow – female – Telepathy and Foresight.
Terracotta brown – male – Healing and telekinesis.
Charcoal grey – male – Telepathy and element control, i.e. wind, rain, fire.

Does this creature need to bond? No, but may choose to do so at any age.
Specific Physical Statistics
Size at birth – a six inch fuzz ball
Size at maturity – Five feet
Time to maturity – 10 years
Lifespan – average 80 years
Large wings, two arms with hands – four fingers and opposing thumbs, the talons limit some of their dexterity. Two long legs with powerful, clawed feet, one back and three front facing talons. Long tail feathers, the movement of which reflects the owl’s mood.
Large, almost flat round faces, prominent beak, large tufted ears, shaped like a cats. Their hearing is very acute.
Have speech capabilities, sounds rather sibilant.
Mental Abilities
They are incredibly smart, think Einstein.
Breeding
Breeding is a very personal choice, and can happen at any chosen time.
The eggs take 3 months to form, and once laid takes 3 months to develop. As the owls lead very busy lives, they have built special incubators to keep the eggs warm, but sometimes a parent feels a need to ‘sit on’ the eggs, some feel this will make the parent/child bond stronger, but this theory has not been scientifically proven. (The owls are very big on proving things, which can sometimes cause problems in the science of magic!)
All males and females are fertile.
They lay 2 – 4 eggs.
In the dominant colours – Red, Purple and Green, there are both sexes. There are also some gender specific colours and these colours usually have a combination of the stronger and rarer magical talents.
