Kiondel Dragon
Homeworld/plane: the kiondel dragons have no true homeworld, although their ancestors are said to originate from one of the Sretane sub-universes. Most likely engineered by a group of godlings, the kiondel dragons have spread throughout the Multiverse, although many of them will seek out the elemental planes of Grund whenever possible.
Climate/terrain: determined by subtype.
Mental abilities: in the matter of intelligence, kiondel dragons are more than a match for the average human. Most kiondels can communicate telepathically and has some telekinesis, but these abilities may vary greatly from individual to individual-- often determined by how social s/he is.
Special Abilities: for the majority of kiondel dragons, any magical talents they may have is mostly limited to their breathweapon and perhaps some additional control over their prefered element. However, about one in nine kiondels are capable of greater magic, and one in five has the ability to shapechange-- even if it only extends to being able to change ones size or alter the form or size of limbs or body without actually becoming another creature.
Society: the society of the different sub-types of kiondel dragons is mostly determined by their type. But even so, most of the sub-types are quite adventorous of nature, in fact their interest in migrating to other planets is almost instinctual-- they will settle at any suitable planet where they can get permission from the resident inhabitants to do so.
Description:
Black(firedancer).
35-50 meters long.
The blacks prefer the element of fire, and this is reflected in their choice of habitat and their abilities. Usually they make their lairs in volcanic regions, but it is not unusual to encounter individuals in almost any dry and hot climate-- most often deserts but sometimes savannas as well. The blacks have two breathweapons-- the primary being a cone of white-hot fire, and the other being a spray of deadly stomach acids(particulary experienced blacks can also combine the two to create a equally lethal gas). To the black kiondel dragons, fire also is life-- they need it when mating and their eggs needs to be immersed in fire to produce viable young. While a hot normal fire may suffice, the blacks prefer the lava of an active volcano, they are immune to its effects and it has even been said that black kiondels have been observed swimming in lava lakes and rivers.
Of nature, the blacks is as volatile as their prefered element-- sometimes they can be kind and helpfull, but they are most often unpredictable and destructive dragons who care little for anyone but their own kind. Only the organization of warriors calling themselves the silverspears have ever successfully forged a lasting alliance with the black kiondel dragons.
White(frostbringer).
60-75 meters long.
Where the blacks are swift and fiery creatures, white kiondel dragons are lumbering giants who prefer the icy temperatures of the polar areas on the planets they have chosen to settle. Far heavier of build than the other colors, whites have wings that are much too small to allow them to fly properly-- but in return they are designed to dig through ice like moles, and they are also excellent swimmers. The magic of the white dragons is linked to the elements of ice and air, something which makes them capable of creating blizzards and control the formation and movement of ice. Whites also have two breathweapons-- the main one is a blast of lethal frost and the secondary is a blast of frigid wind carrying razor-sharp pieces of hardened ice, the last one require more effort and is therefore rarely used.
While not truly evil, whites are anti-social creatures even amongst themselves, and they are therefore likely to react with violence if their territory is breached by any other sapients. However, while the white kiondels seems to be interesting in news from the more civilized parts of the world, they are more likely to capture a few individuals from any party that happens to enter their territory-- using torture to extract the information if neccessary.
Green(foresthunter).
10-20 meters long.
Sleek and nimble of build, the green kiondeldragons are forest-dwellers, prefering the warm and humid terrain of large rain forests where they may use the color of their scales to their advantage when hunting or hiding. With long and flexible limbs and slender bodies, they are able to move as easily and silently through the tree-crowns as on the ground, most greens will also create elaborate lairs of branches and other plant-matter in large trees. Although green kiondels have no breathweapon, their ability to communicate with and control plants and animals within their territory still makes them considerable opponents in a fight.
A bit more sociable than the other chromatic dragons, greens are often found living in communities-- if not in the same tree, at least within speaking distance of each other. Such communities usually consists of one or two mated adult pairs, their young and sometimes a few very young adults from other communities who has been accepted as students and babysitters by the mature adults.
However, while they usually won't attack unwelcome guests into their territory, the green kiondels do have a tendency to take slaves-- particulary if anyone among the intruders seem to have usefull skills and can be dominated. As they greatly value precious metals, gems and artifacts, they also have a tendency to collect hoards-- which can be quite large in the case of older dragon.
Bronze(skywanderer).
20-35 meters long.
Spending most of their lives in the air, bronzes seem to be mostly wing while their bodies are long and thin, almost skeletal of appearance-- even their tails has evolved into a wide, sail-like structure which assists them in flight. Although they can live in just about any climate, bronze kiondel dragons prefer mountaineous areas-- particulary peaks over a kilometer high, where they may lay their eggs without the risk of not being able to go aloft again or getting their wings tangled. Bronzes doesn't really have a elemental-based breathweapon, but in the roof of their mouths they have three glands which produce a material quite similar to what spiders use to spin their webs-- although stronger. Adult bronzes mostly use this ability when constructing a nest for their eggs and when hunting, while the flightless dragonlings will often construct complex webs to catch prey in and to keep off predators and potential enemies. Some more artistic dragonlings occationally use this ability to create wast webs in which they put large amounts of precious metals and gems-- either for their own enjoyment or to attract adventurers.
A female bronze normally produce 3-5 eggs which she then hide away on a mountain top during the five months it takes the unborn dragonlings inside to mature enough to emmerge from their eggs. While the mother herself rarely will interact with her children except for protecting them when neccessary, it is usually left to the father and older siblings from a previous clutch to care for the dragonling till they are old enough to fend for themselves-- usually when a couple of years old. The majority of bronzes are not particulary social, but several may share the same territory and form hunting packs when neccessary, such groups will also exchange information and experience and move to assist another bronze in need of help.
Silver(seadreamer).
10-15 meters long.
The only sea-dwelling species of the kiondel dragons, silvers are also one of the most beautiful-- resembling finned and spiny serpents with the head of a dragon and shimmering silver scales which becomes a pearlescent grey on the underside. Silvers have a set of wide and spiny fins replacing their wings, and while they lack hind-legs, they have a pair of arms and hands which are nearly as dexterious as those of a humans, despite that each finger end in a sharp, retractable claw. The prefered food of the silvers is shellfish, shells and marine mammals, but they often vary their diet with various types of aquatic plants and some may also venture onto land to hunt any suitable animals they happen to find or to gather fruits and nuts. Although silvers can be quite sociable when they wants to be-- particulary when they can gain something from co-operating with another sapient race, particulary the younger ones doesn't particulary care if what they eat is a sapient being.
Like the blacks, the silvers are gifted with two breathweapons-- the first one is a spray of super-heated steam which can boil the flesh of the bones of a unfortunate victim or opponent, the other is a blast of a bluish powder which instantly draws the moisture out of anything it touches-- efficently dehydrating it.
Quite social of nature, amongst themselves at least, silvers live in cities which they construct out of living coral which they have bred for millenia to make it better suited for this purpose as well as increasing its beauty. While their relationships with other races may be determined by what they can gain from it, silver kiondels are quite loyal to their own kind, they will also fight to the death to protect their young and important individuals in their society when needed.
Copper(starwatcher).
50-60 meters long.
Large and compact of build, without appearing too lumbering even at the ground, coppers are large and powerfull beasts who rarely interact with other races, or their own kind for that matter. More scientifically oriented than the other sub-types, coppers are facinated with the possibility of technology-- particulary the subject of mega-engineering, to artficicially alter entire planets and even suns to suit their preferences. When having the opportunity, a copper kiondel may spend its entire life studying a planet or sun it finds to be of particulary interest-- using technology in concert with magic to engineer the planet or sun.
Rather reclusive of nature, coppers will usually avoid any other sapient beings unless they need more training in a spesific area to continue whatever project they are working on, and it is not unusual for a copper to respond with lethal violence if anyone dare enter the area it considers to be its territory. Only in very rare cases, a copper will grow close enough to another of its kind or a individual from another species to permitt that person to come on the occational visit or even rarer-- take up permanent residence in its territory.
Also coppers have two breathweapons-- one is a sonic scream which can stun or kill, the other is a blast of withering light and heat; designed to be particulary efficent against an opponent of a dark nature. Coppers also have another ability which is unique to their sub-type, in their work with a planet or a sun, they tend to establish a strong link with their 'project'-- which may respond to protect its caretaker in whatever way it can.
