Red Valley Wolf.

General Description: native to a moon orbiting the planet Ferleh, the red valley wolf is believed to be a descendant of a number of terran wolfs that was introduced to the planet tens of millenia ago. The red valley wolves are quite different from their ancestors however-- having been shaped by the enviroment of their home, as well as being subject to breeding by a primitive sapient race that also lives at the moon. The fur of a red valley wolf is short-- usually a sharp red color to match the hue of the stone and sand of the continent-spanning 'valley' in which they evolved. However, red valley wolves is also able to change the color of their fur, in order to merge more easily into different landscapes. Considerably larger that their terran ancestors, red valley wolves are also easily the size of a medium terran horse. Their nostrils are wider to make them able to breathe more easily in the thinner air of their home, and a broad chest suggests large lungs as well.
Quite intelligent, nearly the equialent of dolphins, red valley wolves are capable of understanding complex commands and to learn difficult maneouvres-- they can also come up with plans of their own provided that the situation is not too difficult. They are not however, equialent to humans in that matter. Due to their size, red valley wolfs may also be used for riding, as long as the muscles in their backs are carefully trained before bearing a rider for extended periods of time. That and their intelligence also make red valley wolfs excellent fighting animals, whether they are directed by a rider or in free-running packs.

Special Abilities: red valley wolves are able to change the color of their fur to match their surroundings. They are also telepathic and will often form a bond with their riders, though it's more a bond of convenience-- just strong enough to allow the wolf to know if its rider needs help or vice versa.
