Sjirran Per'nia

General Description: about 1000 sjirran years ago, a research starcraft returned to Sjirra with several speciments of a previously unknown species of dragon-- all
kept in suspended animation after having been extracted from one of the sub-dimentions studied by the ship's crew. After the initial attempts to awaken and communicate with the strange dragons at the Bio-Engineerers Hall failed horribly, it was decided that the remaining speciments was to remain in suspended animation, while samples of their DNA was taken so further study could take place. And while others made an effort to locate the planet where this new species of dragon had came from, a group of bio-engineerers were assigned to study the DNA and eventually breed viable speciments.
The first pernese dragons to hatch in Sjirra were all unaltered-- no different from their parents, and although some in the first batch died, the majority managed to Impress despite that the Bio-engineerers had not foreseen that the pernese dragon was dependent on Impressing with a human to survive. However, while the dragonets of the first batch were all healthy and proved to be fairly intelligent, their dependence on a human bond caused many sjirrans to demand that something was done to change it.
During the next year, Bio-engineerers worked with the DNA of the pernese dragon-- giving it a greater wing-span, improving on muscles and bones, and making them far more capable of independent thinking as well as reducing the difference in intelligence and memory-capacity between the colors. Also their size was altered, any sjirran per'nia is noticeably larger than their pernese ancestors. Such abilities as telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation were refined and strenghtened, while the empathy that caused the dependency for a human mind to link with were weakened. Although the sjirran per'nia still retains the instinct to bond with another sapient being shortly after emmerging from the egg, it can still function perfectly well on its own should its chosen rider loose consciousness or even die(while still going through a long period of grieving should that happen). Unlike the pernese dragons, both golds and green sjirran per'nias are fully fertile, although some restrictions are placed at the greens to ensure that only the best genes are passed on to the next generation. Additionally, after much research, the color variety white has been made far more common through genetic engineering and selective breeding.
The word per'nia is a simplification of the words niera(dragonlike) and nesser-pern(from Pern) from the language known as sjirran Common.
