Shadow- 11-11-2004
Several centuries ago, just after the beginning of the seventh Pass, the Weyrs of Pern was in a turmoil. Many riders was of the oppinion that once Thread returned with the Pass, the Weyrs should use their position as the only ones who could protect Holds and CraftHalls against thread to take complete control. And there was several months of unease in the Weyrs of Pern before several Weyrleaders and Weyrwomen who didn`t believe in that dragonriders had the right to rule Pern, gathered to find a solution to the Weyrs problems. Finally, though some of the Weyrleaders didn`t believe that it was the right solution, the decition to banish the trouble-makers to a place where their twisted ways would cause the least trouble.

When returning to their Weyrs, the Weyrleaders emmediately gathered large groups of trustworthy riders and in a quick operation, they located the trouble-makers and kept them restrained to their weyrs until a final decition could be made. The most drastic thing done that day was to remove the Weyrleader and the Weyrwoman of Karra Weyr, and replace them with more responsible and trustworthy riders. Then, two weeks later, the troublemakers from all the Weyrs was gathered, in all there was three goldriders, sixteen bronzeriders, twenty brownriders, thirty blue- and greenriders and several dozen weyrfolk who were removed. Under the strict guard of a large number of bronzes and browns, they were taken north, to a suitable location that had been found by sweepriders only days before. And after they had been told in no uncertain terms that they would be facing a far worse fate if they ever returned, the troublemakers was left in the valley that was their new home.

There was several hot springs in the valley, generating a somewhat pleasant climate in a world that otherwise consisted of snow and ice. So with the resources that they had been given, the outcast riders started the hard task of creating themselves a new home. Some found that too hard to cope with or they wished to take revenge against those who had banished them, but those never returned after they had went back south. But the rest took the challenge of making a proper home out of the valley, building proper weyrs for dragons, riders and commoners and chanelling hot water from the springs to heat weyrs and the Hatching Ground. Since the other two goldriders was found too bitter over being confined to this cold northern Weyr, the rank as senior goldrider was taken by a young goldrider named Lerrin. And it was later believed that without Lerrins efforts, no-one would have survived in the end.

Generations came and went, and slowly the inhabitants of FarNorth Weyr, as their home had been named, forgot where they had came from. Despite the hardness of their lives in the arctic took its toll, both humans and dragons eventually adapted. Dragons did so by becoming slightly smaller and developed a slight increase in their insulating blubber, there was also a noticeable change in the dragon clutches as golds became far more common. Another unexpected change was that women began Impressing male dragons; women who rode blues became common and in some rare cases a female candidate would be chosen by a brown. Humans also became more hardy, developing slightly more compact bodies to deal with the arctic cold and their less versatile diet. But in all, both dragons and humans prospered as well as could be expected with the dangers around FarNorth.
